Don’t Forget to Stretch

When it comes to exercising, people seem to be all about cardiovascular and resistance training but forget about lengthening and stretching muscles. And I’m not just talking about doing a few quad stretches after a run; I mean a whole workout dedicated to stretching and ultimately strengthening muscles and improving posture. Yoga and pilates are excellent modalities to incorporate into an existing exercise regime.

Some of the health benefits of yoga and pilates, outlined by the Victorian governments ‘Better Health’ website, include:

  • improved flexibility
  • increased muscle strength and tone (particularly of your core)
  • balanced muscular strength and endurance on both sides of your body
  • enhanced muscular control of your back and limbs
  • improved posture
  • rehabilitation or prevention of injuries related to muscle or spinal imbalances
  • improved physical coordination and balance
  • relaxation of your shoulders, neck and upper back muscles
  • increased lung capacity and circulation through deep breathing
  • improved concentration
  • increased body awareness
  • stress management and relaxation, and improved energy levels

There are certain gyms that will have a body balance class, which is a combination of yoga and pilates. Or why not find a yoga or pilates studio near you and start with one class per week – Embrace Life offers both Yoga and Pilates. Another option is to do online yoga or pilates; there are a number of dedicated sites that have guided classes and tutorials, or even look up on You Tube!

I assure you that your body will thank you if you make the time to incorporate dedicated stretching and lengthening of your muscles into your health routine.

Happy stretching!
